What is the imposter game?

Word Wolf is an imposter game played with words; you will also see it called the imposter word game, or just word imposter. Everyone gets the same word — except the imposter (here, the “wolf”), whose word is slightly different. Talk about it and work out who’s the odd one out. About 5 minutes a round, from 3 players up.

The majority share a word; the imposter gets a slightly different one. Nobody is told which one they are.

  1. 1

    Deal

Pass one phone around and check your own word in secret. It won’t tell you whether you’re the imposter.

  2. 2

    Talk

Everyone assumes they share a word. If the conversation stalls, read out one of the questions on screen.

  3. 3

    Find

On the count of three, everyone points. Catch the wolf and the citizens win; slip through and the wolf does.

Common questions

Is this an imposter game?
Yes — an imposter game played with words rather than tasks. One player gets a slightly different word and has to blend in without knowing they were picked. Everyone else has to spot them before the vote.
How do you guess the imposter game word?
You do not get told anything — you find the imposter game round by listening. Everyone describes the same word, so the one description that sits slightly off is your imposter. Say too much and you hand yourself in; say too little and you look like the one hiding.
Who is the imposter?
The one player whose word came out slightly different from everyone else’s. Nobody is told, so at the start of a round even the imposter does not know — they work it out when the conversation stops adding up. Settling that before the vote is the whole game.
Imposter or impostor — which spelling?
Both, and people search for both. Whether you call this an imposter game or an impostor game, it is the same thing: everyone shares a word except one player, and you find them by talking.
Can I play free with no install?
Yes. Right on this page — no app, no account, no cost.
How many players do I need?
Three or more. This browser version passes one phone around and works up to 50 players.
Does it work with only one phone?
That’s exactly how it works. Pass the phone around so everyone sees their own word, then talk and vote on the same device.
Can I play online with friends who are somewhere else?
Yes. Open a room, share its link, and 3–20 players can play with one phone each. For voice, stay on whatever call you are already on — Discord, Zoom, anything. Play the online version
How is the app different?
The modes and offline play. This browser version has 300 words and needs no install; the Word Wolf app adds the fox mode and runs fully offline. More about the app
What should I do if I turn out to be the wolf?
Do not rush to say too much. Nod along with what the others describe, look for where your own word does not fit, and steer what you say back into line. Read the tips and questions to ask
Where can I see more words and the full rules?
Our sister site Dokopa has them. Word Wolf words and rules (Dokopa)

The app: Word Wolf

This site is its official browser version. The app adds the fox mode and full offline play.
